Mastiqua, pure sparkling water infused with mastic tears from Chios.

Mastiha is the resin of the mastic tree, which grows only in the south of Chios. Infused into carbonated water, it gives a dry, faintly resinous note — pine and cedar over clean bubbles, with nothing else added.

Useful Information

History: Mastic is associated with Chios. A cosmopolitan Greek island, a Byzantine monopoly often threatened by pirates. It flourished among the Ionians and was fought over by the Genoese and Venetians. Since the handover to the Ottomans, it has always been the task of the mastiha collectors from Chios to collect the precious resin tears from the tree, which arise after gently scratching the trunk. The same traditional collection method is still used today in each of the 24 medieval villages of Chios, inherited by future generations. Naturally flavoured mastic water is a product of the distillation of pure mastic with steam. The combination of mastic with water is said to have started four millennia ago in ancient Egypt, where they used this simple but enchanting idea to make drinking water pleasant. Mastic is a natural aromatic crystallised resin, prized since antiquity and used in perfumery and confectionery.

Premetto che sono un estimatore di acque minerali in genere. Quest'acqua ha un gusto particolare al quale mi sono dovuto abituare ( dopo due bottiglie). La resina di Chios o mastice ha un sapore forte che mi ricorda l odore della resina di Pino. Mi è piaciuta molto e ne bevo un bicchierino dopo i pasti per aiutare i processi digestivi. Ho provato a farla assaggiare ad amici e parenti ma non sono rimasti molto entusiasti. Quindi me la bevo io alla loro salute.
